Review – Mercure London Heathrow

For our half-term trip to the South of France we were flying from London Heathrow on a Sunday as we had enough British Airways Avios points.

We didn’t want to just be waiting at home to travel down for our afternoon flight so decided to head to Windsor for the day where we did the Treasure Trails Murder Mystery Adventure and stay over at an airport hotel.

I booked the hotel using Holiday Extras.  We took a punt on choosing the Mystery Hotel where the website will guarantee you a certain star rating hotel at a discounted rate (but you don’t find out which hotel until the payment is made and booking confirmed).  The main stipulation is that there are no changes or refunds once the booking is completed.  We were confirmed at the Mercure London Heathrow

Booking

Holiday Extras is such an easy site to use and navigate around.  You can book lots of the ancillary products that make up the small parts of any trip from Airport Hotels, Parking, Fast Track, Insurance, Lounges and even Port hotels and parking.

Once the booking is confirmed you receive the hotel details via email and can also download the Holiday Extra App which is again simple to use and saves having to print.

Location

The Mercure London Heathrow is located in Hayes in Middlesex and is just a couple of miles from London Heathrow.  Like most airport hotels there is a shuttle service for a few pounds but we had opted for a Meet and Greet Parking at the airport so didn’t use the shuttle.  The hotel has plenty of parking but this is a paid extra (unless you pre-book of course).

Accommodation

The hotel has been refurbished fairly recently so whilst the outside is still very dated and not particularly pleasing on the eye the inside is smart, fresh and contemporary.  The hotel has 184 rooms with standard, deluxe and superior being offered.  We were booked into a Superior with a Double and then single pull out bed.

The room was decorated in a pretty standard contemporary way and had the usual flat screen TV, tea and coffee making facilities, iron, mini-bar etc.  It was clean and served us well for the night before our trip.  We had already eaten and we had had a long day in Windsor so we showered and snuggled up to watch some TV.  The bathroom was again pretty standard but it did have an exceptional shower which is always a plus for me.

Food and Drink

The hotel has a bar and Borders Restaurant which serves International cuisine every day for dinner.  There is also the Borders Bar which is well stocked and also offers a lounge menu.  The bar is open until 11pm.  The hotel also offers room service which offers a good range of options and this is available 24 hours a day.

We had opted for a Breakfast to be included so that we didn’t have to pay the crazy prices at the airport and had packed a few snacks that should last us until we arrived in France.  The breakfast was served in Borders Restaurant and hot and continental style options.  It was by no means the best breakfast we have encountered at a hotel but it was certainly sufficient and offered decent value for money.

Summary

Location was brilliant and very convenient to get to the airport.  We didn’t have to worry about getting stuck in traffic and therefore had a pretty lazy morning.  The staff were pleasant, and the hotel was clean and did exactly what we needed.  The only down side was it did seem a little noisy but this was internal and nothing to do with the airport.

For the price we paid we were not expecting to be blown away but we were certainly satisfied with the Mercure so would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel for a convenience.
