Review – YHA Malham, Yorkshire

Over the Easter weekend Team TWB headed to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales and the lovely little village of Malham.  The area is famous for walking and was in fact voted number 3 for the Malham Estate Walk  in the UKs Top 100 Walks (behind Helvellyn in the Lakes and Snowdon).

We knew with only a handful of B&Bs, guest houses and holiday cottages that  booking over Easter only a couple of weeks before  was always going to be a push but then we came across YHA Malham.

We have never stayed in a hostel as a family, in fact it had been about 18 years since my round the world trip where this type of accommodation was my staple, but a few school mums rave about them so we thought why not.  Plus as we were spending the weekend walking and not indulging ourselves the price was too good to miss out.

Location

Honestly it doesn’t get much better.  Right in the middle of the village and with a decent amount of parking – if you are driving you are likely to get lucky.

YHA Malham set across two buildings with the reception and shared facilities in the main building and rooms.

Accommodation

The hostel has 81 beds across 19 rooms with beds available in single gender dorms as well as Private Rooms which is what we opted for.  The room was completely immaculate and totally exceeded my expectations.  Our room had 2 bunks beds  but I believe there are some with double beds.  There was a sink and a cupboard and for a couple of nights this would be adequate.

We didn’t have an en-suite but the toilet and showers were close enough and like the room these were super clean.  You do have to take your own towels and toiletries.

In addition to the rooms in the hostel they have the option to camp and also have some 2 camping pods.  These come with heaters, 2 single beds with bedding and are a great alternative to camping.

Facilities

The hostel has the usual facilities offered by this type of accommodation – self-catering facilities (we didn’t use them but they were well stocked), a reception/bar area, dining room. lounge, laundry and a decent sized cycle storage.

Food and Drink

So in addition to the self-catering facilities the Malham YHA offers a cooked/continental breakfast and when you book this online at the time of booking you get a 15% discount.  We took the option and it was good value for money, a pretty decent hot option, cereal, toast, pastries and some yoghurts and fruit so you can certainly set yourself up for the day.

There are a few options to choose to eat in the village but if you want great value for money then the hostel offers a Supper Club with 2 courses for £9.95 with a meat and veggie option plus a choice of 2 desserts.

Summary

We were looking for a good value quick break away and at £53 for the three of us including breakfast we certainly ticked a box in the value stakes.  With a top notch location and being neat, tidy and organised we were so pleased with our choice and would definitely consider a YHA in the future.  In fact, since returning we have checked out other options on their website .

So in terms of recommendations – a resounding YES to Malham without question and a YES for YHA Malham too.

  1. Yay! We love youth hostels, particularly in the UK and Germany. Never been to this one though – thanks for the tip, and I’m really glad you enjoyed your first YHA experience as a family. Greetings from Luxembourg (where the hostels are also excellent, by the way…)

  2. This sounds brilliant. It’s easy to forget in these days of cheap chain hotels that the good old youth hostel can be an affordable solution for families. We’re hopefully going to Yorkshire next year so I’ll definitely give this place some thought, Malham is lovely. Thanks for linking up to #FamilyFriendlyStays
